Assimilating Film for Plastic Sheets

Assimilating Film for Plastic Sheets is a transparent intermediate layer used between a plastic substrate and the final functional film. It is intended for surfaces such as plexiglass, solid polycarbonate and other plastic sheets, where standard window, solar, reflective or printed advertising films may not always adhere correctly over time.

The purpose of the assimilating film is to reduce the risk of bubbles appearing after installation. In some cases, the final film may initially look properly applied, but after a few days it can start to lift locally and form air bubbles. This is not always caused by an installation mistake. It can also result from the behaviour of the plastic sheet itself.

Why can bubbles appear on plexiglass or solid polycarbonate?

Plastic sheets can expand and contract under the influence of temperature changes. This movement may create tension between the substrate and the applied film. As a result, the film can be pushed away from the surface in selected areas, creating visible bubbles.

Assimilating film helps stabilise the contact between the plastic substrate and the final film. It creates a compatible transparent layer that limits the interaction between the materials and helps the external film remain properly attached to the surface.

How does the assimilating film work?

To reduce bubbles caused by opposing forces between materials, a transparent assimilating film should be installed between the plastic sheet and the final external film.

The assimilating film adheres very well to plastic surfaces and helps eliminate the opposing intermolecular forces that can separate the final film from the substrate. This makes it a practical solution when applying films to fresh or sensitive plastic sheets.

How to apply film to plexiglass or solid polycarbonate without bubbles

The comparison below shows a practical test made on solid polycarbonate.

Comparison of silver film applied to solid polycarbonate with assimilating film and without assimilating film

Comparison of film installation on fresh solid polycarbonate with and without an assimilating layer.

On the left side of the comparison, the following layers were applied to fresh solid polycarbonate:

  • first, the assimilating film,
  • then a grey-silver exterior film.

As shown in the test, the film adheres evenly and without visible bubbles.

On the right side of the comparison, the grey-silver exterior film was applied directly to fresh solid polycarbonate, without the assimilating film. In many areas, the film is visibly pushed away from the polycarbonate, creating bubbles that may continue to grow over time.

When should you use assimilating film?

Assimilating film should be used when a final film is to be installed on a plastic sheet and there is a risk that the substrate may react with the film or work under temperature changes.

It is especially useful before applying:

  • window films,
  • solar films,
  • reflective films,
  • printed advertising films,
  • other functional films applied to smooth plastic sheets.

For a cleaner installation on plexiglass, solid polycarbonate or similar plastic sheets, the assimilating film should be installed between the substrate and the final target film. This helps achieve a smoother result and reduces the risk of bubbles caused by the interaction between the materials.
