Self-Adhesive Electric LCD Film – Smart Film for Existing Glass

Self-adhesive electric LCD film, also known as smart film or PDLC film, is designed to change the transparency of existing glazing without replacing the glass. When voltage is applied, the glass surface becomes transparent. When the voltage is switched off, the surface becomes matte and limits visibility through the glass.

This solution is used where dynamic privacy control, light diffusion and a clean modern appearance are required without installing blinds, curtains or other traditional window coverings. The film is intended for application on ready-made glass surfaces such as windows, glass partitions, glass doors, shop windows and glazed furniture elements.

How the electric LCD film works

The film is based on PDLC technology, which uses liquid crystals dispersed in a polymer matrix. Its structure includes:

• an active layer with liquid crystals,
• transparent conductive electrodes, known as ITO electrodes,
• protective layers,
• a self-adhesive layer for installation on glass.

OFF state – matte privacy mode:
When no voltage is applied, the liquid crystal particles are arranged randomly. Light is scattered, the surface becomes milky and visibility through the glass is reduced.

ON state – transparent mode:
When voltage is applied, the liquid crystals align parallel to the electric field. Light passes through the film in a more organised way, restoring transparency.

Controlling the LCD smart film

The film can be controlled using several methods, depending on the installation setup:

• a classic wall switch,
• a radio remote control,
• a smartphone,
• a smart building system, for example KNX, Loxone or Grenton, after using the appropriate relays.

A transformer for LCD film is also required to operate the film. The transformer is selected according to the total surface area of the film. For larger projects, the installation must be divided into sections.

Installation – what you should know

The self-adhesive LCD film is designed for installation on existing glass panes. It does not require replacing the glazing unit, but the installation process is technically demanding and must be planned carefully.

Unlike standard window films installed using the wet method, LCD film is installed dry. This means:

• there is no possibility of correction after the film has been applied,
• the glass surface must be perfectly clean, smooth and properly prepared.

To match different project requirements, the film can be supplied in several ways:

• LCD film cut from a roll,
• ready cut-to-size sheets with factory-prepared electrodes,
• a complete service including consultation, professional installation and an installation warranty.

How much does LCD film installation cost?

The price of the film itself is displayed at the top of the product page, directly next to the product. In this respect, the cost is simple and transparent.

However, when it comes to the price with installation, a quotation cannot be prepared without additional information and photos. Because installation locations vary and each project has its own technical requirements, the installation cost is calculated individually.

Does electric LCD film darken the room?

Electric LCD film is not a blackout solution. In matte mode, it does not block daylight; it diffuses it. This means that daylight can still enter the room, while visibility through the glass is reduced.

The interior remains bright, but it becomes difficult to clearly recognise details on the other side of the glass. This makes the film suitable for projects where the aim is to limit visibility while keeping the space visually light.
