LCD Lamination Film – Smart Glass
LCD Lamination Film is a component intended for the production of smart glass, where the function of changing transparency is permanently integrated inside the glass unit. Unlike LCD film with an adhesive layer installed on ready-made glass, the lamination version becomes a permanent part of the glass structure already at the manufacturing stage.
This solution is used in projects where high mechanical resistance, aesthetics without visible installation layers and a reduced risk of damage to the film by users are important.
How is lamination LCD film different from self-adhesive LCD film?
The most important difference is the installation method and durability.
LCD Lamination Film:
- installed only during the production process of laminated glass,
- completely enclosed between glass panes,
- protected against scratching, moisture and interference by third parties,
- impossible to remove without destroying the glass unit.
Self-Adhesive LCD Film:
- installed directly on an existing glass pane,
- visible as an additional layer on the glass surface,
- exposed to mechanical damage and peeling if installed incorrectly,
- used mainly for building modernisation projects.
The lamination version is a design-stage solution, planned during glass production, while the self-adhesive film is suitable where glazing replacement is not planned.
How does smart glass with LCD film work?
The technology is based on the alignment of liquid crystals in a polymer matrix, known as PDLC technology.
- Unpowered state: the crystals are arranged chaotically, which scatters light and creates a milky surface effect that limits visibility.
- After applying alternating voltage (AC): the particles align in parallel, allowing light to pass through freely and creating transparency.
The change takes less than one second. The system can be operated using a classic switch, remote control, timer controller or integrated with building automation.
Unlike roller blinds or mechanical blinds, the privacy function is achieved without moving parts and without interfering with the space around the glazing.
Smart privacy integrated inside the glass
LCD lamination film is designed for projects where the switchable privacy function should be built into the glass structure itself.
After lamination, the film is not a surface-mounted layer. It becomes part of the complete smart glass unit.
Lamination process – technological requirements
The film is intended exclusively for use in professional glass-processing plants.
Layer bonding
EVA films, or Ethylene Vinyl Acetate films, are used for lamination. They:
- provide stable bonding between the glass and the LCD film,
- protect the liquid crystal layer against moisture,
- maintain a uniform optical structure of the glass unit.
Lamination temperature range: 115–155°C
The process parameters depend on:
- the type of EVA film used,
- the thickness of the glass panes,
- the size of the element,
- the configuration of the lamination equipment.
After lamination, the LCD film becomes an integral part of the glass unit, with no possibility of peeling it off or moving it. The complete product works as ready-made smart glass, changing transparency with a single electrical impulse.
When glass replacement is not planned
If the project does not allow the use of lamination film, we recommend choosing Self-Adhesive LCD Film.
This version can be installed directly on existing glass panes, without the need to replace them.
Optical effect and glass clarity
Smart glass with LCD film has a specific light transmission level in the transparent state. The final visual effect is influenced by all layers used in the laminate.
To achieve the highest possible clarity, it is recommended to use:
- low-iron glass, for example Opti White type glass,
- EVA film with increased transparency,
- a precisely controlled lamination process.
Considering LCD film for lamination?
We recommend contacting our technical department to obtain further technical information about lamination and to discuss what should be taken into account before starting the process.
Product limitations
- In the transparent state, it requires constant power.
- It does not provide complete blackout. In matte mode, it transmits diffused light.
- It does not replace solar control or selective window film and does not significantly reduce room heat build-up.
- It requires professional lamination. Process errors may cause optical defects.
- It is not suitable for installation on existing glass without replacing the glass.
